Renewable charging. Ready for duty. Merseyside Police needed convenient, reliable charging for its growing electric vehicle fleet, while increasing the use of renewable energy to support its commitment to Net Zero by 2040.
Challenge
Supporting a growing EV fleet.
Police fleets don’t get to go offline. Response vehicles, patrol cars, and support vehicles need to be charged, ready, and back on shift, with no room for chargers that are unreliable or slow to install. As Merseyside Police transitioned more of its fleet to electric in support of its Net Zero by 2040 target, the force needed on-site charging infrastructure that could keep pace with day-to-day operational demand, not just top up overnight, but genuinely support a working fleet.
At the same time, the force wanted its charging infrastructure to do more than move the emissions problem elsewhere. Charging a growing EV fleet from grid power alone only shifts the carbon cost upstream. Merseyside Police wanted its own renewable generation feeding directly into that charging, so that fleet electrification was a genuine step towards its Scope 1 and 2 emissions target, not just a change of fuel type.

Solution
Solar-powered fleet charging.

Outcome
Charging that supports Net Zero.
The installation now supports 241 charging sessions a month on average, delivering 28,883 kWh of renewable-supported charging a year, and saving an estimated 12.1 tonnes of CO₂ annually against the equivalent grid-only alternative. That’s measurable progress against a public Net Zero commitment, not just a claim.
For a public sector fleet under real operational demands, that’s the case for solar-supported charging in one line: it works as hard as the fleet does, and it moves the sustainability target forward every time a vehicle plugs in.

The force’s target is to be Net Zero for all scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2040, and it is hoped exploring the use of technology such as this — which uses solar panels on its roof — will help us achieve that
